- Breadcrumb trail
- The links that appear near the top of a webpage that shows were you are on the site usually in a format such as “Home > Some Category > Some Product”
- Spider
- Robot
- The part of each search engine that goes to a website to learn what that site is about. The spider then indexes (a.k.a. spiders) your website.
- Index
- when a spider visits your site, it takes that information and saves it in it’s index, basically a large database. If your site, or a page on your site has been found by a spider, it is indexed shortly thereafter, and will usually show up in the search engines shortly thereafter (in general).
- SERPS
- Search engine results pages Just another way of saying what you get after you search for something in a search engine—a lot of links to lots of websites.
- Keyphrase / keyword
- This is the phrase or word that you are hoping to get high rankings for in the search engines. For example, if I want to appear #1 on Google for “Italian leather shoes” then that is the phrase I am going to try to optimize my website for.
- Gray hat SEO
- a technique which may or may not prove beneficial depending on who you ask, and what mood the search engines are in. It falls between black hat and white hat optimization. White hat optimization are techniques which most SEO’s agree are clearly preferred by search engines, while black hat are techniques that search engines tend to ban when they discover them being used. Black hat can be effective, but is often short lived, therefore avoided by the average SEO.
- Inbound links
- Links from other websites. How to getting links from other websites deserves several articles by itself, so I do not cover it here.
- Anchor text
- For example, here is a link Shopping cart which takes you to website if you click on it. The anchor text are the words “shopping cart”
- 301 redirect
- A way to tell site visitors and search engines that you have permanently moved a page. You would use it generally if you are going to move a page on your site, or rename the file. While this is generally uncommon to need, setting up a 301 redirect is usually a bit technical unless it’s built into your web-hosts control panel.
- Blog
- Web log
- If you don’t know what a blog is, simply search on your favorite search engine for: what is a blog or blog your favorite topic.
- Dynamic application
- Dynamic page
- A page or site that is created using a database. This is common for sites, especially for ecommerce sites. They are not always easy to recognize, but if you have a website and want to know for sure, just ask your website provider. Most shopping cart applications and probably the top 500 most popular sites on the web are dynamic. Ecommerce sites are usually dynamic as it provides the store owner a simple, yet very powerful way for managing products, orders, customers, etc….
- Longtail
- are all the phrases and keywords that bring people to your site, but are not necessarily your main focus. The longtail has been shown to bring substantial amounts of traffic to a site (e.g. 70%).
